(for mimby) The Marqueyssac Gardens are located at Vézac, France - the fantastical curved shrubs are trained boxwoods, and according to wiki the gardens and 17c estate includes an alley of rosemary and cascading water descending from the top floor balcony plummeting below to the river.
One of my web sources says that the gardener who created the gardens, Monsieur Julien De Cerval, was ‘maniacal’. What a wonderful word - dark with a sense of play, whimsy, and crazy mad scientist. Reminds me of David Lynch’s hair.
The garden’s website has an endless clicking sound, like that of garden sheers, backed with sprinklers. A reminder of the never ending upkeep and quiet insanity likely present in the attentive garden staff.
“It is almost exclusively made up of clipped box but near the chateâu this is clipped into elaborate swirling designs and includes paths of clipped rosemary and santolina. There is then a much wilder walk in woodland and clipped box which meanders 130 metres above the river giving fabulous views…During the summer each Thursday evening the gardens are lit by candlelight and various musicians play in different parts of the garden.”
